Good news! Manitou Springs received an Honorable Mention for its first League of American Bicyclist (LAB) Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) application submitted Fall 2020. Since 1995, the LAB has analyzed more than 1,500 applications from communities across the U.S. Currently, there are 485 recognized Bicycle Friendly Communities and almost 50 others earned Honorable Mentions in the last year, to include Manitou Springs. Find out more about the League’s roadmap to help communities achieve their bikeable goals, to include making bicycling safe and convenient while reducing traffic congestion and other benefits.
Manitou’s Bicycle Friendly Community report card includes clear steps that we can take as a community to achieve the next level and beyond. It also lists our intention to launch the PikeRide ebike share program as an impressive and important goal for a community of our size!
What is bike share? It is a convenient, cost effective, and healthy way of encouraging locals and visitors to make short trips by bike, make bicycling more accessible to all, and it helps bridge the “last mile” between public transit and destinations. Thank you to Allie McGahee, Americorps / Vista with the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce, and Manitou Springs City staff for all their work preparing the application. The LAB application process for Bicycle Friendly Communities occurs each spring and fall.
